The Place : Castle Tilea, on the Wenelian coast.
The Time : The evening of Day 23, waterday/fertility/sea season 1617.
Scene : A banquet in the great hall at Castle Tilea.
Outside the walls the clouds gather and it is beginning to rain, but the Great Hall is full of warmth and light. The fireplace casts a warm glow across the hall, supplemented by constellations of candles in candelabras along the walls and on the tables. The walls proudly display trophies from Clovis' illustrious career. You can see swords and shields, axes and spears from Fronela and Ralios, Seshnela and Esrolia. You can also see the coats of arms of those noble houses that Clovis has served over the years on one wall (to the right of Clovis's seat at the head of the table), including the arms of the City of Estali and a group of Ditali clan shields. The opposite wall bears the coats of arms of those defeated by Clovis.
The tresstle tables are laid out with bowls of fruit, bread and small silver pots of salt. A silver incense burner stands on the table in the centre of the room, its aromatic smoke infusing the hall with a soothing sweetness. A group of boys from the town stand to one side playing a jolly melody on rustic stringed and woodwind instruments, and servents move among the guests with wooden trays of goblets full of warm ale and mulled wine.

Egil takes place between the rest of the party listening with attention all that Clovis sais. He is aware that his knowledge of the western way is very limited, so he remain with a serius expresion and talk only when is needed. Someone can think that he's in bad mood or that he is too much shy, but the fact is that Egil fears to be put in a ridiculous situation.
After a few moments Egil waits for speak to Clovis. He walks with an energic pace and salutes Clovis with the head.
"I'm Young Egil, warrior of the Kame clan" says with pride and a splendid smile "It will be a honor offer you my sword to serve you and your family as I would serve my own people"
"My father Njal Bjornsson send you regards and my chieftain want to present his respect throught my person. I hope that you'll find my sword useful." Egil salutes again (anyone close to have a look can see that Egil takes a short look to Arwen.
The rest of the time before the banquet Egil eludes all situations that he feel can't handdle and stays apart and silent.

After his conversation with Carenn in the early evening, Chrétien is seen speaking briefly with Lucas. After a brief exchange, he looks around to where he and Carenn were, but she has moved on. He shrugs his shoulders, and waves his hand in the direction of the guest quarters. He wanders off that way out of the pavillion, enters, and goes up to his room. He is gone for about an hour, after which he re-appears, and has changed into more comfortable clothes.
The heavy gloves are gone, but he wears red calfskin gloves. His bow is gone, as is his sword. He wears the same boots, but they have been cleaned. They seem to be very good quality, but very old and maybe many times repaired, but repaired well. His azure jacket, also fine quality but a little old, is trimmed with gold braided cord. The shoulders are burgundy, trimmed with the same gold braid but thinner, and may not be original, but are well matched. On the right breast, embroidered in white, is his arms, a fret and tressure. He wears khakhi riding trousers, these seem a little newer, but not so fine as the rest of the outfit once was.
Asure, a Fret Argent, a Tressure Argent
The general effect given is entirely dependant on the viewer's prejudices. To the common man, he cuts a powerful figure, but maybe shows as one who could once afford finery, and still has the pride to maintain it. A warrior might see that although he cares about his appearance, he is not an effete or a fop. The highly socially-conscious, courtly observer might swiftly dismiss him as a yesterday's-man.
The more observant, non-judgemental observer might think that the overall
effect is deliberate, and could even come to the conclusion that he is
quietly studying everyone's reactions to his attire.

If its not too late to be in the late afternnon, then Jan'll go down to the Issarian Dream and look her over. He'd like (without being offensive to her crew) to examine her likely capabilities - inshore or at sea, and her capacity for crew and cargo. Perhaps her age and condition.
Afterwards, he'll look out his best evening clothes - dark colours, highly embroidered and in Rhigos style. Apparel of a successful trading family. He'll wear my two swords, but with an ornate sword belt with silver ship buckle, rather than a fighting harness. Dark hair washed, and arranged in a queue. In the evening he will try to keep sober, and to talk to the other seamen about the Issarian Dream. He'll steer well clear of Arwen, if possible without giving offence to her family.
Jane Williams Fri 17/04/98 01:09
Carenn wears a dress of dark green silk which, while in an Esrolian style, is much more high-cut than would be normal in Nochet. The gold beadwork and embroidery around the bodice, though, does its best to emphasize what would normally be more visible. The dress looks new: this may be its first outing. The green leather pouch hanging from her girdle, however, is obviously an old friend, as is the set of sketching tablets that protrudes slightly from it. She has re-braided her hair, this time including green and gold ribbons, and wears a necklace of finely carved malachite beads.
She acquires a drink and retreats to the sidelines to observe the other guests as they re-appear.
Jan, cleaned up and dressed up, gets an appreciative glance. Very decorative.
Chrétien, when he finally emerges, gets studied for somewhat longer and more thoughtfully. She reaches for her sketching pad, then sighes somewhat wistfully and stops herself.
Daren Clark Sat 18/04/98 10:35
Thaddeus wears the same blue and green sailors garb and his gloves. The clothes are of fine materials, that seem to flow with his movement or the wind, and as they do so the greens and blues seem to change hue and flow together. Though of fine quality material, the cut is still of a sailors garb, and closer inspection of the stitching would reveal the neat strong, but not very decorative work of a sail maker.
Carenn watches the colours in fascination. Ahe points this out to Arwen as an exercise in remembering shifting hues.
He is generally quiet throughout the meal and listens to conversations rather than taking part, unless of course he is spoken to or the conversation turns to the sea. He stays sober and is watchful for any comings and goings, faces he knows and attentive for any news of the ship or job ahead.
Daniel Fahey Mon 20/04/98 20:29
At the banquet Arvela is wearing a mauve-colored loose flowing skirt and matching (more or less) blouse with a rather low neckline and loose sleeves. Her hair is held up top with a simple tie. The outfit suits her well except for the deck-sandles, which really throw off the effect in a humorous way. Arvela seems calm and composed, and seems to be enjoying things altho she doesn't actively seek conversation, but just smiles and doesn't look around much. She does readily react to anything going on around her, like servants offering more refreshment and such.
The basic effect is friendly smiling, calmly enjoying, and reacting rather than acting.
Andy Davie Fri 17/04/98 17:02
The Tall, Dark (in a blond sort of way), and Handsome (in a scarred ugly sort of way (hey, at least he's tall)) wanders into the banquet hall wearing his finest clothes.
His finery consists of well made but ordinary cotton clothes. A blue top with black trousers and a dark brown belt. Hanging from his belt is a typical eating dagger. The clothes are relatively inexpensive compared to most of the banquets attendents, but cost him quite a bit of beer money.
Eric will hang around with a jug of beer in his hand waiting to see exactly how one of these fancy banquets proceeds.
He gets a brief, dismissive glance from Carenn.
Roy Sat 18/04/98 23:24
Verspucio returns for the banquet dressed in a silk shirt of a rich deep green (BRG) tied at both wrists and neck (the neck lacing is left open)
His trousers are now ankle length cut in a more cosmopolitan stlyle (though still held by the same belt but with the two metal D loops left empty)
He is wearing leather boots of softer and less worn leather than his previous attire and a black waistcoat with the Arms of the House of Maris emboidered on his Left Breast and House of de Marco upon the right.
He will enter the banquet alone smiling warmly and broadly at all present.
Arwen studies his personal house Arms thoughtfully, wondering what can be learnt from them.
Philip Hibbs Fri 24/04/98 17:36
Chrétien stands, legs apart, his fists resting on his hips, as he looks up at one of the emblems on the wall. He turns his head to look at Clovis, his expression reflecting the storms outside. He breaks into a smile, though, turns, shakes his head and takes his seat.

Chrétien, glad that Maegrez seems to have forgiven his earlier bullishness, replies "It can be a sad thing, when a dream turns to smoke. I was rather hoping that I would become a maritime Knight, but I discovered that the sea did not really agree with me. However, I think your disappointment must be only slight, as you seem to have a good future ahead of you. I consider myself exceptionally lucky to have travelled as I have at such a young age and to have acquired a more useful skill in the expansion of ideas and technology between cultures. Of course some people call it buying and selling to make a profit and indeed that has to be an integral part of any transaction. A good and fair trade sees every party profit in some way though. Now art however, it has it's place, don't get me wrong. What would we be without beauty and harmony to counter the harsh and ugly truth that the world conceals? Jan is also listening to the boys play their music, and drinking mulled wine. "'Tis good on a wet evening to enjoy the warmth, company and cheerful music. I cannot play an instrument myself, but often at sea we would gather and play and sing together, to pass the time. My voice maybe louder than its tuneful, but I can dance most merrily, when I've a mind to. Although you may not have a great love of the sea, master Chrétien, I daresay you'll find your time on the Issarian Dream pleasant enough. She seems a tidy craft, with an able crew."
Philip Hibbs Fri 24/04/98 19:06
Chrétien chokes on a mouthful of ale, and turns away from the table as he coughs and clears his nose and throat. A servant comes over to help, but is pushed away. "I'm alrahaaagh-urh! I'm alright", he says and re-gaining his composure, he turns back to face Jan, who is looking a little surprised. "No, I'm not part of the Issarian Dream's complement. I'm too old for all that, old enough to be your father. I am merely here to return my niece, and to enjoy the celebrations that coincide. I might join the crew for its first cruise, but that will be all that is to my liking."
Jose Manuel Sat 25/04/98 14:40
Egil takes seat when everybody is yet at the table. He seems intrigued and don't speak much. He listen the conversation arround him without attention. Time by time he takes a look over the trophies of the hall. Finally he says to Chretien: "I know that you have a close relationship with Clovis. What you know about this shield? This shield with the bearded warrior at the boss, between the shields of the Ditali clans."
Philip Hibbs Mon 27/04/98 14:30
Chrétien looks around at the shield, and furrows his brow for a few moments. He turns back, takes a sip of ale, and says "That one? Oh, I think it's one of the Ditali warlords. I think he was an ally of Clouis', maybe still is, but I'm not sure."
Roy Dickel Wed 29/04/98 00:54
V interjects somewhat rudely between the two gentlemen,
"I'm suprised Chretien my father has spoken much of you in the past with great admiration and all but ascribed the phrase "keep your friends close but your enemies closer" to you.
Perhaps though such pleasent surroundings are not time for such somber thoughts."
Philip Hibbs Wed 29/04/98 14:00
Chretien looks around slowly and deliberately, looks dispassionately into Verspucio's eyes, and says "And where, monsieur de Marco, should I keep you?"

Fawkes aproaches a group of fellows early on and greets them.
Fawkes to Eric, Jan, Almar and Egil :
"Good evening to you, my lads. You seem a handy bunch of fellows.
Some of the lads are having a practice tommorrow morning, excercising our
skill with sword and bow. If any of you would like to try your hand you'd be
welcome."
Anyone else wishing to take part is free to approach. the offer is available to all.
Simon
Jose Manuel Mon 27/04/98 17:06
Egil, surprised while he was looking at the trophies, takes a moment
before answer:
"Well! That's rigth. I will really like to show my skill with
sword. It's time for me to teach that I haven't made this cicatrice myself
while shaving. But I don't take part in the practice with bow, it's not a
weapon for a real figth."
Then, when he see Fawkes goes he says to Almar:
"I was waiting to have a private conversation with you since I
arrived Castle Tilea. I would like to have some advices from an experienced
coutryman like you. How many time have you been here? There's little that I
know about Clovis, perhaps you could teach me the customes and uses of this
foreign people."
Andy Davie Mon 27/04/98 16:01
Eric grins for the first time anyone can remember and says
'I don't care much for swords or bows, but I'd welcome some axe practise'
'or maybe somebody would care to wager on some wrestling'
Nigel Phillips Tue 28/04/98 10:20
Jan smiles nervously and says " I'm no warrior by trade but I'd be more than happy to practice my swordwork on land. Its too easy to fall out of practice"
Andy Davie Tue 28/04/98 09:33
Eric replies, I need the exercise, otherwise I'll turn into a tub of lard with all this fancy living and big banquets.
Jose Manuel Wed 29/04/98 20:42
"Whilst under this roof I am everyones friend, as that is the way our host would wish it, beyond these walls well I'd never dream of imposing my view on you so I'll leave the decision to your self and hope my actions make interesting viewing."
Turning to Egil still keeping the same smile,
"I'm afraid sir we have yet to be introduced, I know some here such as the honoured monseur Chretien by reputation at least but not all and sadly not your good self, might I make so bold as to inquire as to yourself and how you know Clovis?"
Egil looks Vespucio without any expression (this is the habitual way he
looks). And replies:
"I'm too young for anyone had listen anything from me, I know. But I
hope that under the leadership of Clovis I'll adquire some glory and honour.
There´s no mistery in my relationship with Clovis, my clan and Clovis have
been allies since a lot of years. In my clan is common to send the young
warriors to the house of Clovis to serve him for a couple of seasons. And
there is the way that I've know Clovis."
"And now sir, can I ask you the same question? How do you know Clovis?"
Roy Dickel Thu 30/04/98 18:25
"Certainly my young friend, I know Clovis personally but slightly but my father and Clovis where comrades in arms, friends and on occasion rivals. My father never lets us forget we know our current rather comfertable position to the friendship of Clovis.
Sadly my father is currently in ill health and cannot be here as the crossing may have proved too much for him and my elder brother is at my fathers side the rightful place for a dutiful eldest son.
Hence I'm afraid only my poor skills are available to show my fathers great admiration and respect for Clovis", his smile widens slightly into a grimace and his eyes narrow "and of course because it's so important I get here late", the self reproach leaves his eyes, and don't let youth disconcert you just beacause we trade it in for wisdom doesn't mean you should rush the journey or enjoy it less on the way"
"So gentlemen might I ask your impressions of our other guests as I've yet to meet most of them and would hate to accidently create an incident"
Jose Manuel Thu 30/04/98 00:20
Egil says:
"Well, I'm a foreigner so I'm not the best to give you an advice
over the other guests. In fact I'm very cautius for not to offend somebody.
The manners we conduct in the Ditali tribe are so diferents! But if some day
you travel to our kingdom ask for my father Njal Bjorsson, and I'll introduce
you into the orlanthi ways."
"Anyway, our friend Chretién can tell you more than I. He knows a lot of people here in Castle Tilea"
Philip Hibbs Thu 30/04/98 18:53
This post was originally aimed at only those in the immediate vicinity, as said fairly quietly to Verspucio, but so that those close by would hear as well. However, gossip travels fast, so most of those concerned would hear of it eventually.
Chretien look around nonchalantly, then turns back to Verspucio, and beckons those close by to come a little closer. He takes a breath, and begins quietly.
"Let me introduce Maegrez. A fine fellow, but watch what you say, for he does not take to persiflage or teasing kindly, even to others."
"Egil Nillson here, is exactly what he seems - a young warrior, seeking glory in the service of an ally of his clan. He's a Ditali, and also do not mince words. I made the mistake of underestimating his wit, and Maegrez here put me right. For that I apologise, Egil."
"Jan, I couldn't really say I know him, I only really met him just now at this table. he's a sailor, though, and in my experience that says a lot for a person - at least he must know the meaning of teamwork and structure."
"Almar over there, hes Ditali as well. Is he from the same area as you, Egil? He seems to have his own ship, the Caxtorplose, so I don't know if he's coming with us tomorrow. Speaking of which, are you to board the Issarian Dream?"
"As to the other guests of note, there's Eric, another Ditali. He seems a little rough round the edges, even for them, no offense intended to Egil here. His father was probably kicked off an island by Clovis and leanard!"
"Thaddeus Mercuri over there is a ship's magician, an honest enough trade I suppose, but I have my doubts as to his, how shall I say it, beliefs. He embraces the sea and its wild moods a little too strongly for my liking."
"Now, who have I missed? Ah yes, Carenn over there, she's Arwen's new tutor. She's from Esrolia, the so-called 'Holy Country'. Strange that she should be here, given Clovis' involvement in the Ditali war. She didn't even seem to know what I was on about. The impression that I get is that you can say practically anything you like to her, and she'll apologise and do anything to be nice. Then again, maybe she just has her eye on me."
Roy Dickel Mon 04/05/98 12:34
You show more restraint than me to have nearly missed someone who "has her eye on you" especially so attractive a someone.
Your comments do give me pause ;however; especially about the war if I might take your leave for now gentlemen I'll thank you and trust we'll speak further later
Roy Dickel
V nods politely to Egil and Chretien and leaves thier company,
He circulates breifly through the grouping shaking hands and exchanging greetings as he goes.
He seems almost suprised when his promanade brings him to Careen and greets her with an open and unguarded zeal "My Lady Careen" He bows deeply and extends a hand so the back of the hand faces her waiting.
Carenn offers her his hand, which he kisses.
"And you, sir? I hear that your family are old friends of Clovis. Where are you from?"
"My family or myself?" he looks curious for a second
She raises an eyebrow at the distinction, but says nothing.
"My father originally came from Prax but for many years he has ruled the island kingdom of Carmen near Afadjann (A land of Pamaltela) where I was born."
Her eyes widen slightly at this casual mention of far-off places.
"Clovis helped him secure his erm rightful position as ruler "
Does she smile slightly at the word "rightful?" No, surely not?
"..against opposition from those who had usurped control of the land and it is a debt my father has never felt adequately repaid so its obligation is passed to his sons". He bobbles his head in a kind of half shrug "So currently erm me really".
"You said you painted landscapes?, What provides your insperation?"
"Oh, I paint all sorts of things. Landscapes, portraits - where there is no religious objection to them, that is. I used to work as a recorder for the Library in Nochet, so I can manage an accurate representation of almost any subject. I prefer to show the spirit of what I'm painting rather than just how it looks." She shrugs self-deprecatingly. "Landscapes are easier than portraits in that the subject is more likely to stay still, of course. And many people will buy a picture of a far-away place, whereas only the subject is likely to want to purchase a portrait."
"Now that suprises me Where I come from there is great honour held in having the portrait of a friend, lover, someone you hold in high reguard within the home even if a sufficiantly talented minature artist is to be found about the person it is meant to impart some of the charactoristics you admire in that person to yourself and some of your admiration to the subject.
An artist of talent especially in capturing the spirit, the sought after qualitites is amongst the most highly esteemed of my favours people, ranked alongside wise people and healers as the most valued in the community.
I've no idea if the same would work for a landscape would you gain the strength from a tor or calm from a lake and what would the land gain from yourself? It might be intreguing to find out."
Simon Hibbs Tue 19/05/98 16:00
A bell sounds three times, announcing the commencement of the banquet. Everyone moves to their seats, allocated by the Stweard. Every cup is filled with wine, small beer or fresh water as desired and everyone rises as Clovis and Rowena assume their possitions at the head of the table.
Clovis surveys the hall, and bids the merrymaking begin, then sits and takes a healthy draught of wine. The boys strike up a cheery tune on strings and pipe, as the first course is served.
The fire rorars warmly, the occasional spark spitting from the grate and casting a cheery glow across the hall.
Roy Dickel
The bell sounds and, still talking to Carenn, V heads towards his seat.
Carenn is next to her new pupil Arwen, and will of course be obliged by good manners if nothing else to direct the majority of her attention that way.
V is on her other side, and shows no inclination to change this.
V is quite happy with the seating and chats happily to all in his vicinity not initiatg conversaton but instead dropping lines of comment or witticism into conversations addressing the table (but of course not a private conversation)
Richard Crofts Wed 20/05/98 06:55
Maegrez took a goblet of wine but indulged more in food than drink. For a small fellow he had a ravenous appetite.
"I've never been quite the same since I ate a whole live fish at an impromptu banquet in the east . I have two mouths to feed now. Still, I don't mind when the food is as excellent as this."
So saying he bit into another succulent piece of fowl.
Adam Crossingham Wed 20/05/98 10:06
Milliard disengages from the conversation that he is having with a number of harbour stewards in the corner of the Greta Hall. Gathering his cloak around him he heads for the Hall's entrance, passing quick acknowledgements to others waiting for the feast, and leaves the Great Hall.
Daren Clark Sun 24/05/98 18:11
Thaddeus take the offered wine and to it adds an equal volume of water. This he raise in toast to his host and new found shipmates.
Simon Hibbs Thu 28/05/98 17:20
The banquet proceeds, with new dishes and drinks beign served. As the conversation flows too and fro across the table, some of you may notice the wind whistling at the shutters, the door creaking on it's hinges.
Suddenly the peace is shatterd as one of the shutters breaksopen suddenly, sending splinters of wood to the floor. Cold wind whirls into the room and the fire splutters, sending a cloud of smoke into the room and up towards the rafters.
Servants hurry to repair the damage, and the minstrels strike up a tune to restore the jolly mood, but it's clear that the weather without has taken a nasty turn for the worse.
Roy Dickel Fri 29/05/98 00:07
V Checks everyone near him is okay with the experience starting with Careen then Arwen and so on until he finish with Egil (sorry Egil old chap)
He raises a goblet of wine to eye level and peering over it mutters
"It seems that the company Clovis has gathered is so magnetic even the tempest seeks to join us I hope we've a seat spare."
Further musings are thankfully spared by Chretiens voiced concern for the good Captain.
Jose Manuel Fri 29/05/98 14:59
Egil takes a cup of wine and look inside thoughtful.
"Orlanth must be in bad mood today" he sais in loud voice. "Maybe He wants to say something to me. Do I do something wrong recently?"
Egil takes a drink and look at one of the trophies at the wall. He raises the cup to salute one of the shields and takes another drink.
Roy Dickel Fri 29/05/98 17:53
If you did Egil it might be a really good time to let us all know what it was, having a castle blown down around your ears is one thing having it blow down with out knowing why quite another so time to tell what HAVE you been up to.
This is said in a jocular manner with a touch of camp persuasion over the what HAVE you been up to.
Philip Hibbs Thu 28/05/98 17:49
Chrétien stands up and says, in a raised voice to be heard above the weather, "Clouis, should someone go to see if Millard is alright? A tree could fall on him in this weather. I would go and look for him, and take Jan, Eric or Maegrez if one is willing, they are all strong fellows, and seem to know something of the sea."
Simon Hibbs Wed 03/06/98 15:33
Clovis stand up and calls for calm.
"Milliard has gone to the harbour to make sure the ships are secure. I'm sure they were properly tied to, so it shoudl be merely a routine inspection. He shoudl be back soon. Under the circumstances I think that sending anyone else out would simply put them at risk also."
Roy Wed 03/06/98 18:28
V grabs his goblet and leans back, "I believe it's about the time that people start claiming that this is no real storm and seek to reassure us by tales of terrible examples of Orlanths power that they've lived through.
I hope no one minds if we forgo that pleasure tonight"
Adam Crossingham Thu 04/06/98 09:37
There is a gust of wind that shakes the doors of the hall, and scream around the walls. The gusts continue, the door of the hall buckle again, but this time they open. The flames in the fireplace gutter savagely. Arwen and Frederick, Clovis' children shrink back from the incoming wind.
With the gale stumble a couple of sodden sailors, who grab the doors and hold them open for Cap'n Milliard, who walks in slowly carrying what looks like a bundle of wet clothes.
Milliard stands at the end of the feasting table. The sailors attempt to close the hall doors behind him against the wind. Through the doors the sounds of shouting men, and ships creaking in heavy weather can be heard in the distant from the harbour.
Milliard speaks: "Sire, there is a ship breaking up off shore. This poor traveller is the only survivor we have found...". Milliard pauses. His clothing is completely sodden, the fur of his banqueting outfit dripping. He looks pathetic and out of place.
The young woman Milliard carries cradled in his cable-like arms, is slim and pale, with dark hair. She is wrapped in a midnight blue cloak of crushed velvet, and is sopping wet. Her dark hair lies in bedraggled ropes across her face. She appears to be asleep or unconscious.
Roy Thu 04/06/98 15:29
"Are others still looking for survivors? If so we should join them"
Nigel Phillips Fri 05/06/98 10:20
Jan to Clovis, and everyone: "I cannot sit idly by whilst seamen are foundering. With your permission, I'll away to the harbour and lend a hand, if anything can be done."
Simon Hibbs Fri 05/06/98 15:39
Arwen rushes over to Milliard and helps him carry the poor unfortunate girl.
"Bring her to the fire, she must be freezing. Enoa, fetch some warm dry clothing, quickly."
Covis moves round the table to survey the scene and turns to Jan and
Verspcio :
"Well said, go with Prunella and Sam (pointing to two of the sailors
accompanying Milliard) down to the docks to see what you can do. Anyone else,
feel free to accompany them."
"Prunella, what's the situation?"
Prunella is tiny and could easily be mistaken for a young girl, but for her piercing blue eyes and bold, confident manner. She picks up a flagon of ale from the table and takes a long, deep draught before answering.
"The winds blowing hard, no doubt about that, but the sea is being driven by demons. I've never seen such a swell in these waters, nor anywhere along these coasts. It came from nowhere and then just went back into the deep. We found her (pointing at the young woman) amidst a splintered wreck of a boat on the shore."
"The First Mate's doing the best she can, but there's not a lot as can be done. All the ships have taken damage to their hulls as they were struck against the harbour, but the moorings are lashed down again."
Nigel Phillips Fri 05/06/98 18:06
Jan: "I'll get stuck in with whatever Prunella and Sam want help with."
Jane Williams Sun 07/06/98 20:11
Carenn will do what she can to assist in caring for the girl: no doubt those who know more of Physik can tell her what to do to help.
"Were there any markings on the boat that might indicate its origin?"

Maegrez turned to his companions sternly. "I'm going to grab my cloak and get down to the harbour - they could probably use all the hands they can get."
With that the slight man strode purposefully from the banquet hall.
Andy Davie Tue 09/06/98 06:39
Eric, with great reluctance and a resigned look rises from his chair at the banquet table. With a few long strides he retrieves his cloak and heads out of the hall following his impetuous fellows.
There'll be nothing left worth the look he mutters to himself, I hope they keep the food and beer on hold.
Philip Hibbs Tue 09/06/98 13:49
Chrétien moves his chair aside, steps past Arwen, and picks the sword, bow and quiver from the wall behind him. He looks up at the candles suspended from the ceiling, and his gaze glides down the rope to the bracket on the wall. He scratches his beard, dismisses whatever thought he had, and strides toward the door.
He says to Jan, and the others who are on their way, "I'll catch you up - I'm going to the stable first".
Daniel Fahey Mon 08/06/98 21:33
Arvela runs off to get her cloak (no going out to become another victim of the storm by freezing half to death) and then goes out to help look for other survivors or help secure ships. While she's at it she'll grab any other heavy clothing and blankets she has to give to anyone else outside who doesn't have enuf on or who gets pulled out of the water.
Simon Hibbs Wed 10/06/98 15:43
The Storm
Outside the rain is still coming down as a windswept spray which buffets you this way and that. You can see a thick bank of dark cloud hanging over the coast, though the sky is relatively clear to the north, the red moon only occasionaly obscured.
Hobb the stable boy is settling down the horses and trying to fix a leak in the stable roof.
The path down to the docks curves down past woods on the right and the open comon on the left. A few pools of water have collected, but the path is in good repair and the footing is sure.
Simon Hibbs
The Fireside
The young woman's cloak and outer clothing are stripped off her and fresh warm blankets brought by the servants. Enoa brings a large bowl of warm water that was going to be used for washing dishes in the kitchens, but now is used to warm the poor girl's feet. She murmurs, her eyes opeining slightly. Suddenly she shudders, jerking forward and sneezing violently.
Philip Hibbs Wed 10/06/98 15:46
The Storm
Chrétien takes a deep breath, and pushes his way out of the hall into the tempest outside. Leaning into the wind, he makes his way to the stable, and picks a coil of rope from the wall. He spends a few seconds examining it, tracing his hand around its coils, and almost seems to be talking to it.
Returning to the stable doorway, he looks out to where Jan, Eric and any others are going, and heads off after them.
Daren Clark Sat 13/06/98 11:31
The Storm
As they travel down towards the sea Thaddeus puzzles over Prunella's words of demons involved in the wreaking of the boats. Was this a random unleashing of these creatures power, he thought not. But why have they acted so and at whose or whats command? Perhaps it was some powers attempt to close the seas once again, though from the description of the damage to the craft, it was not catastrophic to the boats in harbour, they could be repaired. Perhaps then to wreak the craft from which the survivor came. That was a success to the demons, though perhaps not totally so. There were no survivors, probably, but this one and perhaps she was also meant to perish. She may know a great deal, but that would have to wait until the craft are seen to and other survivors searched for.

The Storm
Can I add V to the docks party he'd have left with Jan an will be either stride or just behind him.
Roy Dickel Sun 14/06/98 10:10
The Storm
As he proceedes down the path V offers quiet prayer to Orlanth for the lives of those caught within his power.
Upon reaching the docks he will immediatley head for his upturned longboat which contains ropes, blankets , torches and medical supplies
(V has had to prepare for more than1 hasty exit in the past)
Simon Hibbs Mon 15/06/98 15:03
The Storm
Jan, Eric, Chretien, Arvela,, Verspucio, Maegrez and Thadeus.
If I've missed anyone else out, I deeply apologise. Rest assured anyone who wants to be down by the docks will be as soon as I describe the scene there, which should be soon. Haven't heard from Adam so I don't know if Milliard is there as well yet.
The only advantage you have by being on the list of people I know is that when you arrive at the docks I can write about things happening to your character. A dubious advantage at best. Basically I trust anyone who has decided their charcater itsn't at the docks not to decide retroactively that they are there later. So long as you have it clear in your mind where your character is and are consistent about it that's fine.
Jane Williams Sun 14/06/98 20:59
Carenn is in the hall. She's staying there.
She helps care for the woman, and hopes to discover something about her origin and anything she may be able to tell about the shipwreck.
She also makes sure that warm blankets, hot food, etc. are ready for the rescue party on their return. Does the House of Maris know about mulled ale yet? If not, they're about to find out.
If either Arwen or Frederic tries to join the rescue party, she will dissuade them, putting the argument that they should stay here where they can control things rather than her real reason (that they're too young).
Simon Hibbs Fri 19/06/98 17:05
You make your way down the path, tugged this way and that by the tempestuous winds, rain seeping into the openings and seams of your clothing. When you make the last turn, you can see the ships tied at the docks below, and the beach over to the left.
You can see that the 'Kaxtorplose' has taken damage to her prow and port side. The Issarian Dream seems in better condition, but her stern is damaged too.
There are sailors securing the lines on the Kaxtorplose and checking the condition of the fishing boats.
Verspucio's boat is safely above the waterline, upended on the beach. Another boat lies on the beach, it's stern lapped by occasional waves. There is something funny about the lines of the boat though, it seems somehow misshapen.
Nigel Phillips Fri 19/06/98 17:46
If conditions allow, (and no one in command tells us not to) then Jan will help Verspucio launch his boat and row for the wreck. May Dormal aid us...
Daren Clark Sat 20/06/98 12:36
Thaddeus moves as closely as is safely possible to the beached craft and inspects its line, sail, mast arrangement, etc., for any indication of its home port, or travels. Also the beach for any useful wreckage.
If able he will board the craft, casting skin of life 6 first, in case he is swept off by a wave.
Daniel Fahey Sat 20/06/98 19:42
As Arvela is helping with V's boat she sees the "funny" boat. She'll help push V's boat out but instead of jumping in she'll then run over to the "funny" boat with the strange lines.
Simon Hibbs Mon 22/06/98 11:46
As you aproach you can see that the boat is about 16ft long, but it's difficult to tell precisely because the keel is cracked. The planks of it's hull amidships are warped and split. Certainly the boat is not floatable at this stage.
Thaddeus - you can get into the boat by climbing over the prow or the side of the boat. As you put your weight on to the side, the boat pivots slightly as a wave shifts the stern to one side.
Richard Crofts Tue 23/06/98 08:38
Maegrez wrapped himself tightly in his cloak against the howling wind and watched the proceedings intently, ready to lend a hand if he saw or anticipated the need.
Simon Hibbs
The boat seems to be stable now. You can see that some of the plancks of the hull are torn and splintered inside. There is still water slopping around towards the stern.
The boat appears to have a collapsible mast and rigging, which are tied up and stowed inside along with various other bundles of canvas and some oars.
Simon Hibbs Tue 23/06/98 11:32
Sailors are climbing around inside the Issarian Dream and the Kaxtorplose checking the rigging is secure and clearing some of the debris. A pair of sailors are struggling to secure another line from the Kaxtorplose to a secure fastening on the dock.
The fishing boats seem well secured, and sre tied to each other for additional stability. Milliard's ship the Pride of Handara also seems well fastened.
A young sialor with a scrappy beard meets anyone approaching the ships. He is soaked to the skin and has a bruise on his left cheek. He shouts over the wind - "The Kaxtorplose tore free from her ties and crashed into the Issarian Dream, then broke some of her port side against the dock. First Mate Goldie and Skoot are bellow decks assessing the damage now."
Philip Hibbs Tue 23/06/98 14:06
As Thaddeus, Arvela and Verspucio are struggling with one of the boats, Chrétien arrives to hear a young sailor explain about the Caxtorplose traing loose. "What of the wrecked ship? Where did it come to grief?"
Simon Hibbs
The Youthfull Sailor :
"That would be the boat on the beach being investigated by those
three of your company, Sir. It came from the sea shortly after the storm. We
thought it must be empty, the crew lost overboard, but Capt. Miliard went to
investigate and found that young woman aboard."
"My pardon Sir, but I should get back to the Kaxtorplose and help secure her."
The young man pauses for a moment to see if there are any further questions.
Philip Hibbs Tue 23/06/98 15:16
Chrétien indicates with a sweep of his hand in the direction of the Kaxtorplose. He follows the sailor as far as the end of the path to the docks, and looks out to sea for a few moments with his brow shielded by his hand.
Adam Crossingham Tue 23/06/98 17:38
As Carenn helps Enoa with the poor, unfortunate shipwreckee, Milliard will catch his breath, dump his sodden cloak on the floor, and attempt to remove the excess water from his clothing by patting himself down with a blanket. He will avail himself of any mulled drinks if they are available.
Milliard stares at the sodden woman and the frenzy of activity around her... as if he was concentrating on a puzzle. Then he drains the contents of the drinking chalice proffered to him by a servant. Speaking as if to himself, Milliard says:
"It's a foul night to be abroad on the sea, even Magasta herself ...." At mention of the goddess, Milliard pauses and makes a curious hand gesture: half genuflection half reflex, and then continues, "Might flounder... in these waters."
Simon Hibbs Wed 24/06/98 18:03
Chretien approaches the boats with the young sialor. As they near the Kaxtorplose the sea level beneath the boat drops with the swell and the ship swings away from the dock, putting the ropes securing the aft of the ship under immense tension.
The ship steadies, the roaps creaking under the strein. The two sialors securign one of the lines put their weaight against the line trying to hold it steady, but there is an ear splitting *CRACK* as the ropes give way. The rope whips round the stay and smacks into one of the sailors who staggers towards the edge of the dock. He trips on a coil of rope and dissapeard over the side of the dock into the sea, between the dockside and the ship.
The Kaxtorplose rises up on an incoming wave, the hull of the ship about 6 feet from the dockside.
Philip Hibbs Wed 24/06/98 18:00
If he is alongside the ship, and there is a chance that it is coming towards him, Chrétien will back away swiftly.
If he can catch sight of the unfortunate sailor, then the end of the rope carried under Chrétien's cloak will dart towards the man and coil itself around him.
Richard Crofts Thu 25/06/98 00:26
Maegrez will rush down to Chretien's side.
Daren Clark Fri 26/06/98 16:52
Thaddeus takes some of the ropes stored within the boat and ties an end off to the boat before throwing the other end to those on the beach. "Make this fast to a tree off the beach, or what ever you can find." He then begins to look through the stowed contents of the boat for anything other than the normal rigging, oars, etc. Perhaps there is a log if the pilot was literate.
Daniel Fahey Fri 26/06/98 21:32
Arvela takes a line and looks for something to tie it to, and assuming she finds something, does so.
Simon Hibbs Mon 29/06/98 09:35
By the time Chretien has turned to cast the rope the sailor is over the side and in the water out of sight. The only way to target the rope is to move up closer to the dockside.
The Kaxtorplose' wooden hull creaks and groans as it rises on the swell.
The other sailor who was knocked over staggers to his feet.
Philip Hibbs Wed 01/07/98 18:00
Chrétien moves back towards the edge of the dock, and looks for the beleaguered sailor.
Richard Crofts Fri 03/07/98 00:05
Maegrez will prepare himself to catch any ropes that come his way and will tie them off accordingly.
Simon Hibbs Thu 02/07/98 12:02
The sailor is in the water, trying desperately to reach up for the edge of the dock. His hand is only a foot below Chretien's feet.
The Caxtorplose is unharmed so far. The prow is still tied off securely, but the stern is still free. If the ship swings into the dock it could be damaged further.
Some of the lines that were securing the stern are still free and could be grabbed and re-tied to securing points on the dock. Sailors are rushing towards you from the Issarian Dream and the Pride of Handara to give a hand. Seamen on the Kaxtorplose itself are securing more lines on the ship and preparing to cast them over on to the dock.
Philip Hibbs Fri 17/07/98 08:42
Chrétien will brace himself to pull up the sailor, and drop six feet of rope down to him.
Simon Hibbs Fri 07/08/98 15:57
Thaddeus manages to recover some oilskin bundles from the wreck of the small boat or launch on the beach. The rest of the gear is a dismounted mast, sailcloth and such, much of it now damaged. but repairable.
Chretien and whoever jump in and give a hand manage to get hold of the sailor in the water and haul him out just as the kaxtorplose smashes into the side of the dock. The sailor is suffering from shock and caught a nasty blow from the rope which knocked him into the water. He's also got a twisted ankle.
Those of you at the docks you manage to tie off the Kaxtorplose again and it seems that the terrific waves that were causing the main problem seem to be subsiding.
What are your priorities? Which ships are each of you going to? Who's organising repairs and assessing the damage?
Simon Hibbs Fri 07/08/98 16:05
The pale, dark haired young woman is quickly wrapped in warm blankets and seated close by the fire. A mug of warm milk is procured from the kitchens and there is much discussion as to the best remedies for such an occasion.
The young woman seems to recover her composure and, without warning, suddenly stands up. She shruggs off some of the blankets wrapped round her and stands in the steaming wet dress in which she was found. She turns to those around her and says in a steady voice :
"I thank you for your concern, but I asure you I am quite alright. Would you please be so kind as to show me where I might rest for a while. I find myself quite fatigued."
She seems apprehensive, but quite calm and collected.
Philip Hibbs Fri 07/08/98 16:09
Cheétien is taking the sailor back to the hall for the women to tend to.
>Who's organising repairs and assessing the damage?
Goldie, I presume.
Jane Williams Fri 07/08/98 19:42
What style is she dressed in? Anything I recognise as being from a particular place?
What language is she speaking?
> "I thank you for your concern, but I asure you I am quite alright. Would
> you please be so kind as to show me where I might rest for a while. I find
> myself quite fatigued."
Well, presumably one of the people who know their way around here will do
so. Shame they're all NPCs.
> She seems apprehensive, but quite calm and collected.
Despite the rest of the occupants of her ship still being un-accounted
for? Hmm.
While Enoa or whoever finds her a room, presumably there'll be time to ask questions? Like "It's good to see you're unharmed. We haven't found any more of your shipmates as yet, I'm afraid: how many should we be looking for? And where are you from?"
Assuming we get answers to this lot, and she's wlling to talk, go on to introduce myself and tell her where she is.
Daniel Fahey Sat 08/08/98 11:01
Arvela finishes securing the damaged boat to something and helps Thaddeus get the bundles out if they are too heavy for one person to carry. I suggest to him that we go toward the ships to see about helping there, while glancing around for any more people washed up.
Simon Hibbs Mon 10/08/98 17:46
She is dressed is the style of a Young woman from Nolos, though it is commmonly copied in Ralian society.
She speaks in Trade Talk, with a clearly Seshneggi accent. She uses a number of Seshnelan words, but they are fairly clear in context.
Carenn knows her way round the place fairly well by now. She is quartered close to the family suite herself.
> While Enoa or whoever finds her a room, presumably there'll be time to ask
> questions? Like "It's good to see you're unharmed. We haven't found any more of
> your shipmates as yet, I'm afraid: how many should we be looking for? And where
> are you from?"
She seems somewhat confused.
"It was very dark and I was asleep. Whe I woke up there was a lot of shouting and I went up on deck. Everyone was abandoning the ship in boats and some of the sailors took me to the boat. We cast off, and I can't remember anything after that until the beach, and a man taking me up in his arms. I thought it might be my father, but it was someone else, then I was here."
She shivers and clutches at a chair to steady herself.
Enoa puts her arm round the girl. "I realy think she should get some rest, I'm sure all these questions can wait untill the morning. Perhaps by them we'll have found some of her companions."
Nigel Phillips Thu 13/08/98 18:14
I will examine the Kaxtorplose and see if she is sound enough to get through the night without further harm. I guess I'm going to get my party clothes wet and dirty down in the bilges...
Assuming all is reasonably ok I'll try to find Goldie on the Issarian Dream or the docks and see if I can help (damn why didn't I take my tools to dinner, someone else's hammers just not the same)
Daren Clark Thu 13/08/98 22:55
Having recovered the oilskin wrapped bundles from the boat, and making sure that the remains of the launch are secured to some point up on or above the beach, Thaddeus gathers up the packages and makes his way back towards the dock.
Be is somewhat surprised to find, as he goes, that the others have left the beach before him and are back at the dock. When he arrives however to see the others tying off the ships once again and the state of the sailor he soon realises why.
He goes first to the sailor and aids him as best he can, with use of magic and his more mundane skills in this area.
He then reports to Goldie as his first priority must now be to his new ship, and offers his services.
Simon Hibbs Fri 14/08/98 16:56
Jan can see that the hull has taken a battering in several places where she crashed into the dock side. The ship's taking in some water, but fortunately most of the damage is above the waterline. Still, the structure has been weakened and it will take quite some time to make the ship seaworthy again. Perhaps as much as a month.
The Issarian Dream is in better shape. The Kaxtorplose collided with her the first time she broke loose, but most of the damage is at deck level. She's still basicaly seaworthy, but could do with some repairs for safety's sake. There are some viciously sharp splinters where the plancking has split.
A number of the crew of both ships were injured in the collision with the Kaxtorplose, including one lad who fell from the rigging. Goldie's getting them taken off the ships at the moment. They will be taken to the tavern to be looked after.
In the mean time, work crews are cutting away shattered timbers with axes and hammering tarred rope into the gaps.
Nigel Phillips Fri 14/08/98 18:03
After examining the Kaxtorplose and the Issarian Dream I'll lend a hand with the work crews on the Issarian Dream.
Daniel Fahey Fri 14/08/98 14:42

I'm somewhat surprised to read that Arvela is already at the dock, after writing that she'd help Thaddeus with the bundles if they're heavy. She'd also already tied the launch, as reported. Didn't leave beach before and don't get to dock any earlier than Thaddeus. Also reporting to Goldie and asking how to help.
Simon Hibbs Mon 17/08/98 09:19
It's really too dark to continue work tonight. Once the deck has been cleared of debris and the hull has been checked for serious damage, a skeleton crew are left to keep watch and the rest disembark.
Philip Hibbs Mon 17/08/98 09:41
Chrétien was helping the sailor, and sees that they are being taken to the tavern, so he'll help the sailor in that direction if needed, then go back to the hall.
Daren Clark Mon 17/08/98 22:40
Learning that all that can be done for now has been done, Thaddeus takes his bundles and returns to the Hall, eager to learn if the contents of the bundles can shed any light upon the ship, her crew, the survivor, any cargo or route details or the sudden storm.
